Sails Along the Coast 1978

Written in 1978, this was recorded at NC State two years after I graduated with a degree in Design and Philosophy. I was invited to play live on the campus radio station, and the DJ recorded it. There are several other songs that will appear later on other albums from that show as well. Besides recording the show at midnight, you can hear the young age in my voice and the old equipment being used to record. I have included this here because it is unique. A newer version that was recorded in 2011 ends this album later. The older one may be better than the newer one.

Sails Along the Coast

It's not the same as when I first noticed my days

And confusion seems so often such a gentle haze

And though the views of what to do are even fewer now

I feel somewhat less confused but I couldn't answer how

I'd rather spend my life in sails along the coast

But pains don't change with places, they're always just as close

Perhaps there's something we should do to bring us sense

As here among our situations we search for some defense

And it's a beginning, the things I feel right now comin' on

It's a beginning, though vague and without control

So slide me to the tide and let me go

Slide me to the tide and let me go...

The edges of the islands curve up from the sea

And like my life and times, they float past me

And so the scenes of former dreams come to my mind

And as I lay on the deck, I slip in time

Yeah it's a beginning, the things I feel right now comin' on

It's a beginning, though vague and without control

So slide me to the tide and let me go

Slide me to the tide and let me go...
